ICC Men’s T20 World Cup preview, 27-29 June 2024

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will come to a thrilling conclusion on Thursday 27 and Saturday 29 June 2024, as the semifinals and final are played in San Fernando, Georgetown and Bridgetown in the Caribbean.

The first semifinal sees South Africa take on Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago, on the early morning of Thursday 27 June.

The Proteas have registered seven wins from as many matches this tournament and topped Group 2 in the Super Eight after a nail-biting win over the West Indies on Monday, while Afghanistan have been the sensation of the World Cup and knocked out Australia on Tuesday morning when they defeated Bangladesh to finish second in Group 1.

“It’s a lot of relief to get through to the semifinal,” said South African captain Aiden Markram. “We would have liked to be more convincing with bat in hand. After the rain break, the wicket was playing nicely. We did not get the partnerships to then kill the game [against the West Indies].

“We tried to kill it [the chase] too early. [But it’s] massive for us and fantastic for the change room, but hopefully we can avoid those tricky situations [moving forward]. We have not played our best game of cricket yet, so we will try to put it together for the semifinal.”

The second semifinal on Thursday afternoon pits India against England at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana.

India topped Group 1 in the Super Eight, underlining their status as one of the tournament favourites with a hard-fought but deserved win over Australia on Monday evening, while England finished second in Group 2 and secured their passage with a comfortable triumph over the USA on Sunday.

England captain Jos Buttler returned to his best form with a stunning innings of 83 runs off just 38 balls, and he will be hoping to carry that momentum into the clash against India.

“Really important," Buttler said when asked about his return to boundary-crushing form. "I've been feeling good all year, to be honest. You don't always get the results, but I feel like I'm hitting the ball well and it's nice to get that confidence. And then it's important to look after my own game as well. As much as you're trying to be captain and have a broad view, I'm still one of 11. I've got to do my job.”

The two semifinal winners will go on to play each other the final, which will be played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on the afternoon of Saturday 29 June.
