Thapelo Molomo wins Idols SA

Local 14 November 2022

Limpopo’s singing policeman brings us inside his morning after, his career dreams and his Idols SA journey.

“It’s very important that a person understands that there is time for everything. It doesn’t mean your failure today determines your future. Take the positive criticism, build on that, run with it, and grow from that.” Those are the words of Thapelo Molomo, Idols SA Season 18 winner before his audition.

The 29-year-old police trauma counsellor from Limpopo, showed the judges that he could take notes on overperforming, grow, and use the criticism to deliver precision, passion and performance in one beautiful package.

We spoke to the Idols SA winner about where he is now, that big winning moment, and what he’s doing next…

5 quick questions

Where did you wake up this morning?

I woke up at the Idols SA House and it was like a dream. I’m still processing it even now. It was just like, “Is it truly happening? Did it really happen?” I’m feeling really good. It's quite a beautiful feeling.

What was your reaction when the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, got on stage to call you an inspiration?

That was a beautiful, great moment for me. The impact was so positive. It created an assurance that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has my back. Also, SAPS is there to support people with talent, they don’t suppress gifts. It’s not just about chasing criminals, but they also enhance the talents of the SAPS members.

You’ve been counselling your clients online during Idols SA. How are you going to continue with your career and your new life as the winner?

I will go back to the office. We’ll meet during the week and then on weekends, I’ll attend events and gigs to proceed with music.

What was the best thing about performing Rihanna’s hit Lift Me Up – from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack with the runner-up, Nozi?

It was such a perfect song to close the competition with. It’s indeed an inspirational song, so it was just perfect, and it was personal to us.

What’s your message to everyone who wants to enter Idols SA?

Don't have self-doubt. It can be possible for anyone. Believe in yourself. Believe in your gift. Believe in your talent. You will never know when it is time for your breakthrough… and prayer was my biggest tool.
