The sun was shining, the music was playing, and attendees were singing along to their favourite tunes at the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival.

Along with the incredible line-up on the stage, there were various food stalls that offered delectable food, and activations to explore – one was the My Kitchen Rules South Africa (MKRSA) express restaurant. The pop-up eatery offered takeaways, and attendees could order from five menus. There was also an exclusive masterclass on Saturday 24 September, which was hosted by the reality show’s judges: chef David Higgs and muso Joao da Fonseca, who’s popularly known as J’Something.

Cooking from the heart

The hosts prepared dishes that were close to their hearts. “We’re here to showcase home cooked food that is worthy of the competition,” said J’Something, before adding “We’re also celebrating South African food. What we see in Season 4 of MKRSA is that the contestants are unashamedly who they are: they [express] their culture and diversity – and that has inspired the meals that we prepared at the masterclass.”

In keeping with the theme, J’Something and David cooked meals that speak to who they are. First in the kitchen was J’Something. He put together fritto misto followed by Karoo lamb, with pea hummus and corn. David on the other hand whipped up Ceviche, then Springbok and caper aioli, and for dessert, he made white chocolate eclairs. “People often ask us what we’d cook if we were contestants on the show. Like the contestants on MKRSA, we cooked meals that speak to who we are,” says David.

When asked what makes MKRSA S4 different, J’Something and David both agreed that it captures South Africa’s diversity. “The cooking show is an international format, and this season shows the essence of South Africa through the narrative, food and contestants,” says J’Something. “Our country is diverse, and food helps us showcase that in a unique way.”
