We gave Boer Soek ’n Vrou host Reandi Grey a fake dating profile and asked her to pick out five red flags.

South Africa’s most successful matchmaking reality series, Boer Soek ’n Vrou Season 17, is back with 10 new farmers looking for a wife this August.

Behind the scenes, the show’s casting team scoured entries to select the pick of the crop of men looking for love, partnership, and a genuine connection. Then of these farmers, just those who got the most letters from the ladies made it through to the final selection. Only the best for South Africa! “They are special salt-of-the-earth people who deserve love – and I feel honoured to be a part of that,” insists kykNET’s new Cupid, Boer Soek ’n Vrou Season 17 host Reandi Grey (Anja in the telenovela Diepe Waters).

Watch Boer Soek ’n Vrou Season 17 from Thursday, 7 August at 8PM on kykNET Channel 144. If you want to know more about the show, binge Boer Soek ’n Vrou Seasons 14-16 on Showmax.

And that’s lucky for them. But for those still out here on the dating apps, times are tough. To celebrate Women’s Month, we asked Reandi to help out.

We scoured several dating apps for some of the most sus profiles and statements – the ones that might make you wonder, “Hmmm, is he writing this to attract a woman, or to flex for another man”. We compiled them all into a Frankenstein's Monster of a fake profile, sprinkled the word “woke” (derogatory) on top, and sent it to Reandi (jammer, Reandi). And we asked her to pick out just five subtle and not so subtle signs that would make her dodge that date in a hurry.

5 red flags that make Reandi pump the brakes

  1. About me: I’m an alpha male…

“This guy seems to be more than just the alpha male. He’s the whole Greek alphabet with a protein shake,” jokes Reandi. “He gives off a strong desire for dominance rather than partnership. I guess the Sunday night movie will always be his choice…I wonder how many times one can watch The Wolf of Wall Street?🤔”

  1. What I’m looking for: I’m looking for a HIGH-VALUE woman … who’ll put her man first like my mom and knows how to show respect.

It wasn’t just those shouty capital letters that got Reandi’s back up, it was confusing respect with obedience. “I wonder if I would at least be allowed to pick the colour of my apron – which I will be wearing all of my time doing my well-deserved, traditional, kitchen-is-where-I-belong, duties?” Reandi muses.

  1. What I’m looking for: DON’T BOTHER IF YOU CAN’T TAKE A JOKE.

“Oooh, game on!” says Reandi. “Did you know, mansplaining is not a real love language?”

We can just imagine veins throbbing in foreheads because well, actually…

  1. My job is: Bitcoin CEO

Shame, at this point we think Reandi was getting a little worried about our fake man.

“I truly hope this is a joke,” she says. “Bitcoin is a currency, not a company.👌🏻”

  1. Relationship status: Not looking to get tied down. Let’s keep it casual, but exclusive.

“Great! Quick question … could I just clarify, so are we casual or exclusive?” asks an exasperated Reandi. Look out for those contradictory statements, ladies – like when his profile pic is him fanning out a stack of cash while leaning against a sportscar … but his “What I’m looking for” statement includes a rant accusing women of being golddiggers.

“All jokes aside, this profile reads like a walking parade of red flags: defensiveness and immaturity; lack of emotional availability; dismissive attitude toward empathy and … women,” warns Reandi. That’s a big no, not just for Women’s Month, but every month.

But keep your eyes peeled, because we aren’t saying all hope is lost – as the saying goes, there’s a lid for every pot.
