Addictive drama

The Pitt

This medical drama series just raked in 13 Emmy nominations! Each of the 15 episodes takes place in “real-time” during the same day at the underfunded Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital's emergency room, where Dr Michael "Robby" Robinavitch (former ER star Noah Wyle) welcomes four newcomers to the staff on the anniversary of his mentor’s death during the Covid-19 pandemic. They’ll have to tackle everything from a mass shooting to an overcrowded waiting room that never clears.

Mr Loverman

British drama series based on the novel of the same name by Bernardine Evaristo. Seventy-five-year-old Barry Walker (Lennie James in a BAFTA-winning role) is a doting family man, and the charming pillar of London’s Antiguan immigrant community until his affair with his best friend, Morris De La Roux (Ariyon Bakare in a BAFTA-winning role), is exposed after 50 years of secrecy – finally showing his wife Carmel (Sharon D Clark) that she was never to blame for his infidelity.

House and Sherlock Holmes fans, how about a medical drama series centred on the great detective’s trusty companion? Morris Chestnut plays Dr John Watson, a former consulting detective who now heads the Holmes Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he puts the techniques of investigation and observation that he learned from his late friend Sherlock (voiced by Matt Berry) into practice diagnosing patients. Meanwhile, the evil genius Moriarty (Randall Park) keeps tabs on his work from the shadows.

Chimp Crazy

Emmy-nominated documentary series directed and produced by Tiger King’s Eric Goode. Missouri Primate Foundation manager Tonia Haddix lands at the centre of a tug-of-war between animal rights group PETA, federal marshals with a court order, the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries-accredited organisation Save the Chimps, and others like Tonia who own, sell, breed, exhibit, and profit from captive, non-human primates. Facing separation from her beloved chimpanzee “son” Tonka, Tonia seems set to make a chilling decision.

The Secret Life of Trees

Host Michael Palin peels back the bark on some of Earth’s oldest living beings as he travels through the UK and Europe. Each of the three episodes focuses on different aspects of the lifecycles and daily lives of trees – including how they communicate, send out warnings when they’re under attack, care for each other, change over time, share their memories with younger trees, and survive through time for thousands of years. It’s a lot more interesting than watching grass grow!

Reality with a twist

Destination X

Travel reality competition series hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Ten strangers (although we know some of them, like Love Island US star JaNa Craig, from other reality shows), are split into teams and transported around Europe in a bus with blacked-out windows. Once they stop at a location and get off the bus, they have to figure out where they are. The one whose guess is the furthest from their location is sent home as a disgrace to the American education system.

Castle Lager Rugby Championship

If you wonder why the Springboks have gone quiet, it’s because they’ve been busy at training camp, gearing up to take on Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia in this international rugby union competition. The Boks launch into the campaign with back-to-back Tests against the Wallabies in Johannesburg and Cape Town this August, before flying off to New Zealand to face the All Blacks in Auckland and Wellington, and squaring up against Argentina’s Los Pumas in Durban and London.
