10 date night movies to fall in love with

There’s no greater romance than our love for movies! July brings us two timeless romances about lifelong love – We Live in Time with Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, and Here, with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright (the Jenny to Tom’s Forrest Gump). 

If you’re at home on Wednesday, 16 July, you can catch the MovieRoom (channel 113) romcom marathon, with Kristen Bell’s When in Rome at 06:00, Reese Witherspoon's Sweet Home Alabama at 07:40, Cameron Diaz’s Knight and Day at 11:20, and Katherine Heigl’s 27 Dresses at 13:15 (maybe skip Jennifer Aniston’s The Break-Up at 09:30 unless you’re in a down-with-love mood, though).

Comedy. The Proposal

It’s a romcom classic for a reason. To make it convincing, Margaret agrees to meet Andrew’s family in Alaska, for his sharp-tongued granny Annie’s (Betty White) 90th birthday celebrations.

See the Ryan Murphy movie that launched a million pieces of kitchen word art! Julia Roberts plays Liz Gilbert (a version of the real-life author whose book this movie was based on), who spins out of her marriage with an affair, and a divorce, then spends a year travelling across Italy, India, and Bali as she tries to re-centre herself and rediscover the joy of living. Along the way, she finds love with Felipe (Javier Bardem), a Brazilian businessman.

The Holiday

This cozy Christmas romantic comedy doubles up on love, pairing Kate Winslet and Jack Black as Iris and Miles, along with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law as Amanda and Graham. Iris and Amanda swap their houses in the UK and Los Angeles, hoping for a festive break with a difference … and they wouldn’t say no to a holiday romance if you’re offering. While there’s plenty to enjoy about Amanda and Graham (Iris’s brother), it’s Iris and Miles who win viewers’ hearts.

Surprised by Oxford

Looking for sweet and clean? This movie was adapted from Carolyn Weber's memoir about her experiences at Oxford University after she won a full scholarship to pursue her doctorate in romantic literature. In the film, Caro Drake (Rose Reid) arrives at Oxford laser focussed on her studies, but finds herself with a side interest in fellow American Kent (Ruairi O’Connor), as they chat about author CS Lewis and his description of finding faith in his 1955 autobiography, Surprised by Joy.
